Created in 1923 by Alice Everaerts, better known as Zlica, piano teacher of Prince Leopold, Prince
Charles, and Princess Marie José, The Musical Labyrinth is an educational game
dedicated to Queen Elisabeth. Its principle is simple: players must identify composers based on musical
themes printed on the cards. Behind this playful concept lies a clear vision of the classical repertoire:
of the 355 proposed themes (and not 500 as stated on the box), German music predominates, followed by
French and Austrian repertoire. Italian and Belgian works are given only a limited place.
Today, this game
stands as a unique testimony to how people sought to teach music in a playful way at the beginning of the
20th century.
